25 75kW DC chargers

Revel partnered with Ampcontrol to optimize the charging operations of the Revel Superhub in Brooklyn, New York. The Superhub is the largest public fast-charging hub in North America, with 25 75 kW DC chargers. It is open 24/7 and has dual use for Revel’s electric ride-sharing fleet of Tesla Model Ys and public charging.

45%
Reduction in Power Demands

Ampcontrol reduces the Superhub site’s peak power demand from 1,000 kW to 550 kW, which significantly reduces monthly costs.

100%
Vehicles Charged On Time

Ampcontrol ensures every vehicle is charged on time for its next shift while reducing the site’s peak power demand.

10/10
Reliable Fleet Operations

The fleet operators don’t need to use any dashboard and go through any training. The optimization automatically reacts and ensures fully charged vehicles for the following driver’s shift.

Challenges

Avoid High Demand Charges

New York City has some of the most expensive demand charges in the United States. It is crucial to avoid high demand charges, therefore, expensive electricity bills.

Ensure on-time departure of all vehicles

It is essential to maximize the fleet’s operations and have all vehicles ready for their next shift. Any delay might cause wait time for drivers, fewer rides per day, and lower revenue through rideshare service.

Optimize Site Utilization

With the Superhub dual-usage of charging — external paying customers and internal Revel fleet — it is necessary to ensure seamless operations for both users, allowing external customers to access the fast charger’s full power.

Solution

Effective Planning and Simulations

Ampcontrol and Revel previously collaborated during the planning phase of the Superhub. Ampcontrol used its simulation environment to estimate the site's power demand and charger utilization. Revel then leveraged this to select charging equipment and identify possible site locations.

LEARN HOW
Real-Time Vehicle Charging Optimization

As a second step, Revel implemented Ampcontrol’s real-time optimization software to control the charging at the Superhub. Ampcontrol connects to the Tritium DC fast chargers to send and receive charging information, considering vehicles’ SoC (State of Charge), site’s maximum power capacity, and vehicle schedules to run real-time optimizations and ensure the on-time departure of all vehicles.

LEARN HOW
Successful Vehicle Differentiation: Fleet vs. External

Ampcontrol’s software can automatically differentiate between a Revel vehicle charging and an external public charging. For example, this differentiation allows prioritizing the public charging customer, letting them charge at full power while re-optimizing the charge of the Revel fleet. This way, the site does not increase the power demand, and operations can continue without delays or interruptions.
