Demand Side Management

Glossary

What is Demand Side Energy Management?

Demand side management for EV charging refers to the strategies and technologies developed to maximize and control the energy consumption associated with charging electric vehicles. This includes scheduling charging at off-peak hours, incorporating energy storage devices to manage fluctuations in demand, and using smart charging to distribute the load across the grid. The goals are to assure a constant and efficient use of the available electrical resources while lowering peak demand and energy costs.

What is an example of energy demand management?

An exemplary illustration of energy demand management is the implementation of smart charging systems for electric vehicles. With the use of smart charging, EVs are set to charge when the demand for electricity is lower and energy costs are reduced - also known as off-peak hours. Through the use of real-time algorithms and data, combined with the settings provided by the fleet operator, smart charging management systems can actively adjust the rate of charging based on grid conditions/availability. This dramatically helps prevent overloading the grid while optimizing overall energy use. Energy demand management not only helps in balancing the load on the grid, but it can also reduce operational costs for fleet operators and charging site managers.
